Mariam Astin Athaba Hira Barua, a short story collection by noted Assamese novelist and short story writer Arupa Patangia Kalita is selected for 2014 Sahitya Academy award for Assamese.  Her writings are famous for women issues and questions and it is really a moment of great pride to see her winning  the Sahitya Academy award 2014. She rightly deserves it.

Ayananta was our first encounter with Arupa Patangia kalita's writing.  It was at that time when we started to notice a feminist undercurrent in our Assamese literature. Arupa Patangia is undoubtedly one of the pioneer writer in Assamese who could blend the feminist undercurrent in her writings without being loud. Anyway Ayananta would really impress our young minds.

  • Arupa Patangia Kalita's shorts stories are equally impressive.  Her story story collection Alekjaan Banur Jaan is also loved by readers.  Assamese literary magazine Gariyosee is one regular publisher of Arupa Patangia's writings.  Her  other novels are  Mriganabhi (1987),  Millenniumar Sapon (2002), Marubhumit Menaka Aru Anyanya, Kaitat Keteki, Rongamatir Paharto, Felanee etc. Some of her renowned works are published in other languages like Hindi, Bengali etc. as well.*
  • Her prowess of story telling is well recognized by awards like Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad award, Katha Prize, Prabina Saikia Award,  etc. Once she has  declined an award from Assam Sahitya Sabha for selecting her writing for an award in the women writers category. However, Assam Sahitya Sabha is famous for such wrong reasons many a time.  She had been a Jury member of Sahitya Academy Yuva Puraskar 2013.
